The roads in our part of the sierra do not usually have bridges to cross the rivers that traverse them and they usually have water running across them where they cross rivers most of the year, so you need to go THROUGH the river on the track used by other vehicles. Trucks, vans and SUVs are the best vehicles for getting across the small rivers (we'd call most of these "creeks" back in Kentucky where I grew up). You shouldn't need 4-wheel drive. Just go fast and steady across them and don't slow for anything until you hit dirt on the other side.
