And that's the biggest problem locally with Halloween that has crept up over the years. First, since the kids don't even know which day is Halloween, they simply go "trick-or-treating" for about 3 or 4 days now (seems like they keep adding an extra day every so often). Second, since the history of Halloween (and thus its cultural roots) are also unknown among the kids and most of their parents, they simply see it as an opportunity for free candy and money. And since they often "trick-or-treat" at local restaurants full of tourists, the tourists often give them money, and THAT has started a whole new side to the local problem bringing more and more of the area's poorest children into the downtown area to seek free money for several days. Meanwhile, the sanctity of the true meaning behind Día de los Muertos gets irreverently trampled and displaced by new generations of these local children.
