Find the Zihuatanejo Artisans' Market on Calle 5 de Mayo in downtown Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico. One block from the waterfront and beginning across from the church, the market is made up of small stalls set in aisles that run for about three blocks. Bargaining is traditional here and is expected, but instead of trying to get the lowest price possible please try to be generous and remember that almost everything here is hand-made and has been brought a long distance from high in the mountains. |

From high in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains come the descendants of the original inhabitants of this magical country: Mexico's indigenous people. Tucked away in isolated villages where life has changed little since the Spanish Conquistadores first arrived, talented artisans produce their marvelous works of ceramics, woodcarvings, weavings, sculptures, jewelry and clothing. |
| You'll see artisans like the one on the right painting ceramics and other objects they sell. Most of the arts and crafts are from tiny villages in other parts of Guerrero, but often the finishing work is done right here where you can watch. It's fascinating to watch their skilled hands produce such intricate designs with the relative ease and quickness that comes from years of producing these beautiful objects. | For many vendors in the Mercado, Spanish is their second language; their first language usually being Nahuatl, the language spoken by the ancient Aztecs. You'll hear them chatter away often in what we call their dialecta.
