From high in the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains come the descendants of the original inhabitants of this magical country: Mexico's indigenous people. Tucked away in isolated villages where life has changed little since the Spanish Conquistadores first arrived, talented artisans produce their marvelous works of ceramics, woodcarvings, weavings, sculptures, jewelry and clothing. |
You'll see artisans like the one on the right painting ceramics and other objects they sell. Most of the arts and crafts are from tiny villages in other parts of Guerrero, but often the finishing work is done right here where you can watch. It's fascinating to watch their skilled hands produce such intricate designs with the relative ease and quickness that comes from years of producing these beautiful objects. But it's even more satisfying to buy one of these objects after you've watched it being painted so that you'll also have the memory of watching it being created to remember it by. | ![]() CLICK PHOTO TO ENLARGE |
For many vendors in the Mercado, Spanish is their second language; their first language usually being Nahuatl, the language spoken by the ancient Aztecs. You'll hear them chatter away often in what we call their dialecta. Many pick up English readily due to similar phonetics in both languages and the fact that many have already learned one new language, Spanish. | ![]() CLICK PHOTO TO ENLARGE |
Vibrant colors leap from everywhere you look, and you can't help but marvel at the wonderful festive scenes and imaginative designs which adorn their works. Landscapes and vistas, village festivities and country scenes, flora and fauna all come together to tell stories about the people and their culture. A culture millennia older than most others here in the Americas. |
